WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN DRIVING IN THE FAROE ISLANDS?

14/07/2024

GENERAL INFORMATION

The total road network in the Faroe Islands is 600 km long and all roads are paved. There are no motorways in the Faroe Islands, so you don't pay any toll for them. You won't find a railway here either.

The main road is road 10 and 11, connecting the four most important islands, starting with Vágar Island, where Vágar International Airport is located, Streymoy Island with its capital Tórshavn, Eysturoy and Bordoy, with the second largest city of the Faroe Islands, Klaksvík.

Drive on the right hand side and keep your lights on at all times. All passengers must also wear seat belts, including those in the back seat. You can drive from the age of 18, but rental companies usually require a minimum age of 21.

There are several single-lane roads in the Faroe Islands with lay-bys, mainly to let oncoming traffic through. These roads lead, for example, to the villages of Tjørnuvík and Saksun on the island of Streymoy.

Also watch out for wild animals, especially sheep and horses, which are abundant on the island. It is not for nothing that the Faroe Islands are nicknamed the 'Sheep Islands'.

Parking is free throughout the Faroe Islands, including in the capital Tórshavn. The only exception is Vágar International Airport.

SPEED LIMITS

Faroese roads have the following speed limits

  • 30 - 50 km/h (populated areas)
  • 60 - 80 km/h (tunnels)
  • 80 km/h (asphalt roads)

FINES FOR SPEEDING

Driving fast really doesn't pay off in the Faroe Islands. The fines are high and can cost you several thousand crowns. There are no speed cameras here. All speed cameras are informative and show your current speed, but they do not measure it. However, the police can carry out safety operations to enforce speed limits.

TUNNELS

There are more than 20 tunnels in the Faroe Islands, of which only four are toll tunnels.

  • Vágatunnilin, connecting the islands of Vágar and Streymoy (opened in 2002)
  • Norðoyartunnilin, connecting the islands of Eysturoy and Bordoy (opened in 2006)
  • Eysturoyartunnilin, connecting the islands of Eysturoy and Streymoy (opened in 2020)
  • Sandoyartunnilin, connecting Streymoy and Sandoy islands (opened in 2023)

HOW DO I PAY FOR THE TUNNEL?

The prizes are divided into three categories - cars up to 3.5 tonnes, cars over 3.5 tonnes and motorcycles.

You have a total of three options to pay for tunnel passage.

  1. One-off payment for each individual passage
  2. Automatic payment from your debit or credit card
  3. Payment through a car rental company

Car rental companies offer unlimited passes for a daily payment. In most cases, payment only applies to the Vágatunnilin and Norðoyartunnilin tunnels. This means that you will still have to pay for the other two if you pass through them.

You can pay the toll via the website https://www.tunnil.fo/, where you will also find all the information you need.

DRIVING AND ALCOHOL

There is no zero tolerance for alcohol when driving in the Faroe Islands. The current limit is 0.05% blood alcohol. That's roughly the equivalent of two large beers or one glass of wine.

However, this is very individual. It mainly depends on how well a person breaks down alcohol.
