CHURCH ÞINGEYRAKLAUSTURSKIRKJA

Þingeyraklausturskirkja is the oldest stone church in Iceland. It is located in the Þingeyrar area in the north of Iceland. Interestingly, Bishop Jón Ögmundarson founded the first monastery in Iceland in 1133 on the site where the church stands. Ögmundarson did so after committing to build the monastery after the famine that was spreading across the island had ended.

The stone church was built in 1877. It was also consecrated in the same year.

In 2018, the first archaeological excavations took place, revealing layers from the 17th and 18th centuries. A chalk pipe with a hand-carved human head was also found.

GOÐAFOSS

Goðafoss Waterfall, known as the waterfall of the gods, is one of the most visited waterfalls in northern Iceland. It is 12 metres high and 30 metres wide.

The waterfall is located about 35 km from Akureyri, Iceland's fourth largest city, and only 0.5 km from the main road 1. Therefore, it should be a stop for anyone in the area.

Parking at Goðafoss Waterfall is FREE

PARKING

There are two spacious car parks on site, which are free for all cars. There is an N1 petrol station and a small bistro with a souvenir shop on the right side of the shore.

MÝVATN NATURE BATH

The Mývatn nature bath is located near Lake Mývatn, about 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. It is a complex of geothermally heated pools with a sauna and a swim-up bar offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The pools have a temperature of 36-40°C and are fed by water from a depth of 2.5 km.

Mývatn nature baths are similar to the better known Blue lagoon, located near Keflavík Airport. However, you won't encounter crowds of tourists here and you'll still pay half as much. A full day entry costs 6 490 ISK.
